Cook in a Traditional Akha Bamboo Kitchen
An authentic open-air setting in central Chiang Mai, not a tourist classroom.

Your Thai cooking class in Chiang Mai takes place in our open-air bamboo kitchen, built in the traditional Akha style. You cook at your own private station with a clay stove, a stone mortar and a glowing wok, surrounded by herb gardens and the tools our family has used for generations, the way Akha food has always been made.
There are no blenders and no shortcuts here.
You hand-pound your own curry paste, balance the flavours by taste, and hear the stories behind each dish from the Akha cooks who grew up making them, a hands-on experience that turns a simple cooking class into a window onto Northern Thai hill-tribe life.
Thai Akha Kitchen was founded in 2015 by Niti Muelaeku, our Owner and Chef. Born into the Akha hill tribe of northern Thailand, she learned to cook from her family and trained for four years in fine-dining kitchens in the USA.

How long is the Thai cooking class and what is the schedule?
The Morning Class runs about 6 hours (around 9:00am to 2:30pm) and opens with a guided market tour; the Evening Class runs about 5 hours (around 5:00pm to 9:00pm) and starts straight in the kitchen. Both end the same way – sitting down together to eat everything you cooked.

What is the difference between the Morning and Evening class?
Only the timing and the market visit. The Morning Class includes a walk through a Chiang Mai fresh market to choose ingredients (1,400 THB); the Evening Class skips the market and begins in the kitchen (1,300 THB). You cook the same authentic Thai and Akha dishes in both: it is the same Thai cooking class in Chiang Mai, just at a different time of day.

What dishes will I cook in the class?
You hand-pound your own curry paste and cook a full 11-dish menu from scratch – soups such as Tom Kha, a curry, stir-fries, a classic like Pad Thai and a dessert such as mango sticky rice, plus a Northern Akha specialty you will not find elsewhere. Everything you cook, you eat, and the recipes go home with you.

How much does the Thai cooking class cost, and what is included?
Morning Class 1,400 THB and Evening Class 1,300 THB per person. Every booking includes fresh ingredients, your own private cooking station, a take-home recipe booklet, and free hotel pick-up and drop-off in central Chiang Mai. No hidden extras.

I am vegan or vegetarian, or have allergies – can I still join?
Absolutely. Every recipe in our Thai cooking class in Chiang Mai is adapted to your needs, and because you cook at your own station there is zero cross-contamination. We handle vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free and serious allergies – we even swap roasted pumpkin seeds for peanuts. Just tell us when you book.

Do I need cooking experience, and how big are the groups?
No experience needed – our Akha teachers guide you from holding the pestle to balancing flavours in the wok. Groups stay small (12 to 16 guests) so everyone gets personal attention from start to finish.

Can I control how spicy my food is?
Completely. You pound your own chillies, so you decide the heat – we offer 5 spice levels, from Mild to the legendary Akha Warrior. Love spice or prefer none at all, your plate is yours.

How do I book, and is hotel pick-up included?
Book your Thai cooking class in Chiang Mai online in a minute – pick the Morning or Evening Class, choose your date and pay securely (card, PayPal or cash on arrival) for instant confirmation. Free pick-up and drop-off is included for hotels in our central Chiang Mai service area.
